TERRITORY
Cantù: a place of history, culture and tradition.
The Cantù area offers various itineraries of thematic tours, linked to the landscape, to historical monuments (villas, churches, baptisteries etc.) and to the craft workshops in the sector of wooden furniture.
During the period of the 11th International Lace Biennial from 6th to 20th October 2013 there are scheduled guided tours for booked groups, exploring the territory and richness of the town which, in spite of the increasing urbanization after the Second World War still displays the structure of a medieval town once surrounded by walls.
The most ancient part, which dates back to the tenth and eleventh centuries, in centred on what is now Piazza Garibaldi and includes religious and secular buildings alongside the remains of the circle of walls, located on high ground dominating the ancient route Como-Milano.
Here you can visit the churches of St Paul’s (late 11th century) with the contemporary Chapel of the Madonnina, St Theodore’s (1200) and the nearby church of St Antony’s, the chapel of St Francis (frescoed in 1400), traces of the fortifications of the castle of the Pietrasanta family, the Ferraia Gate (1324), the churches with a central plan such as St Mary’s….. (16th century) linked respectively to the Benedictine and Augustinian monasteries, Villa Calvi (early 19th century) and, further out, the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Miracles (1554).
The monument of greatest artistic merit is, however, the Romanesque complex of the Basilica and Baptistery of Galliano, one of the most important proto-Romanesque buildings present in Lombardy. -
